Women’s Poker Magazine
Yet another poker magazine has made its debut in the past couple months,
following the pattern of new publications coming out of the woodwork as the
game continues to increase in popularity. One of the newest magazines come
with a twist though; “Woman Poker Player Magazine” is specifically geared
towards a traditionally overlooked segment of the poker world, the female
poker player.
One of the keys to making a magazine that stems from a fad last is to ensure
that it carries a big and specific appeal to a target demographic. Finding
its niche among the one third of poker’s estimated online playing population
is a good way to go.
“Woman Poker Player Magazine” is a Canadian publication, edited by
professional poker player Barbara Enright and overseen by Maryann Morrison.
The magazine, of course, is written in and targeted to a female player’s
perspective, but anybody reading the publication will be able to garnish the
latest news from the poker world as well as pick up tips on how to improve
their game.
Enright is the only woman who has ever made the final table in the World
Series of Poker Championship event, as well as holding many other first for
a female poker player. Last month’s issue of the magazine included a
featured interview with her which included her insights into poker today and
in the future. She offers some strategic thoughts to women who are entering
the world of poker, although dismisses the idea that she is a role model for
them.
The publication does not spend any time indulging in a
let’s-even-the-scales-by-writing-them-down that can often be found in
publications that are designed for women. Instead, it concentrates on being
a quality opponent that shouldn’t be looked down upon, which is again
reflective of the audience for whom it is tailored.
