Gordon to leave Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown
The host of Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown is stepping down after 42
episodes of the show. Phil Gordon has announced that due to the end of his
contracted obligations, he will be leaving the show to explore other
opportunities. Gordon is apparently frustrated with the lack of action from
featured players on the show, as he said in a statement that he just wants
“to see people play in turn, bet more than $200 into a $5K pot, and know
when they have the nuts. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than saying
‘Phil Hellmuth loses another big pot, and it looks like he’s ready to
implode!’ on national television.”
It seems obvious that Gordon feels he is ready for bigger shows, but he might
have wanted to take a quick look at the hosts (read hostesses) of the big poker
shows on network television before going all-in, let along putting all his cards
on the table in such a statement.
It seems as though the poker Brat himself is not averse to small time tournament
calling, as he is reportedly in therunning to replace Gordon on the show.
Hellmuth himself spoke about the approach of the show’s producers in a recent
interview with All-In, saying “Maybe, if the time considerations work, then it’s
possible—it’s possible—that I’ll get involved." Bravo reps had no comment on the
issue, but the irony would be manifest. It’s a good bet that Bravo would like
nothing more than Phil Hellmuth narrating the story of Phil Gordon on a “Where
Are They Now?” series featuring celebrities created by the poker boom.
