Floating For Tillys
There was plenty of drama and excitement at all the tables in the first
round of the National Heads-Up Poker Championships on Saturday, but it was
the pairing of Jennifer Tilly and professional player Paul Philips who stole
the entertainment show.
Who really knows what got into Phillips, maybe the thrill of the action, maybe
the proximity of so many cameras for NBC (which will be broadcasting the event
for six consecutive Saturdays beginning on April 16). Or it could have been
Tilly herself. Jennifer was an eye-catcher, dressed in a revealing black dress
and flashing a million dollar smile that would have sent any man who received it
straight to cloud nine.
This was proven in the round by Philips, whose routine included donning a gray
hoody sweatshirt, shadow boxing, push ups, and a demonstration of Tilly’s
ability to get men floating as he actually levitated while waiting for the final
board of the all-in that took Jennifer’s chips. How he did it is anybody’s
guess, but this moment is sure to be one that NBC will be showing on its
broadcasts, because of both Phillip’s antics and Tilly’s appearance.
Phillips took the match and will move on Sunday to take on Ernie Dureck. Last
year’s champion Phil Hellmuth was defeated by David “Chips” Reese, who will be
playing last year’s runner-up Chris “Jesus” Ferguson. Favorite Phil Ivey was
also eliminated on Saturday, along with every female to enter the tournament
except the vivacious Dee Loung, whose powers of distraction may have helped her
to a victory over Men “The Master” Nguyen.
