United Kingdom Poker Parties
Poker continues to be a main event attraction across the United Kingdom.
Poker feasts all over the island are making for delighted victors and
disheartened losers. Here’s a summary of what’s been going on:
Last weekend, the Grosvenor at Brighton put on its very first festival of
poker. This event should put a little fire in the pants of the Sussex coast,
as up until now the biggest action was at the Rendezvous Casino on the
Marina. The Main Event at the Grosvenor, where locals could compete for a
prize approaching 100 pounds, was won by local player Mick Clark.
At Walsall, Midlands Mayhem continued on Saturday, where the Main Event saw
a purse of 1500 pounds. Preceding the Main Event, smaller tournaments were
held, and congratulations are in order for Stuart “Easy Pickings” Rutter for
another win of 200 pound on No Limit Hold’em Rebuy tournament, bringing his
total to 15,000 pounds. Rutter is a contributor to UK Poker News.
At the Heart of England Poker Festival at the Broadway in Birmingham, the
Main Event was the 1,000 pound No limit Texas Hold ‘Em Freezeout. The winner
had an available prize of 32,800 pounds, half for second and half of that
for third. Some famous poker players on the United Kingdom poker circuit
were present for the tournament, including Joe Grech and Paul Jackson. Both
players ended up as the last men standing, in a great showdown. Jackson had
come into the showdown carefully controlling his resources, but the massive
amount of chips held by Grech saw him through to victory after a marathon
match.
At Sheffield, a similar 1,000 pound No Limit Hold ‘Em Freezeout was the Main
Event at Napoleon’s. Simon Nowab took the pot, adding to the impressive
performances of 2005, when he placed as runner up at the Grosvenor UK Open
Poker Championship at Luton and the 2,000 pound World Heads-Up Poker
Championship in Barcelona. Nowab triumphed over formidable competitors such
as Keith “The Camel” Hawkins, who in August took first prize a the casino’s
summer festival. History was not to repeat itself for The Camel this time,
as he made it to the final table but finished a disappointed seventh.
