Students Win Tuition Online
Poker is no longer a game of sullen cigar smokers or middle age buddies on a
night away from the family, drinking beer, belching, and adding to their
beer bellies. Often associated with huge losses of money, addictions , and
time, the new phenomenon of online poker is proving all assumptions wrong,
especially when it comes to the new breed of participants. The new
generation of poker player is young and plays online, and a lot of them are
college students.
In fact, the demographic is so large that many online poker sites, such as
Absolute Poker, are now sponsoring tuition giveaway tournaments. Winners of
the tournament can receive reimbursement of their tuition for a full
semester. Students agree that the “Win Your Tuition” tourneys sponsored by
the company are an invaluable and unresistable hook to the online gaming
table.
Some people might be tempted to think that the popularity of these online
tournaments contribute to academic laziness, the opposite is true of a
recent winner of an Absolute Poker tuition giveaway. Twenty one year old
Jeremy Olisar, a student at Carnegie Mellon University, recently won such a
tournament. He is an honor student with a 4.0 grade point average, who
usually helps his parents with the hefty price of his tuition by teaching at
the Carnegie Mellon School of Music’s Preparatory School every Saturday. He
had only been playing the game of Hold’em for two years when he beat all the
other players in the tournament (from over 300 college campuses worldwide)
and had his tuition reimbursed for a full semester. Olisar still finds his
victory hard to believe.
“I’ve been playing all sorts of card games for as long as I can remember,
but I only started Texas Hold’em recently. I never imagined that my first
tournament win would be as big as this!” Olisar stated in a press release.
There are lots of ways to pay for a college tuition out there, but why not
have some fun while you are at it? Some wonder if this is the most reliable
way to pay a college tuition, but students do not see the problem with it.
“If you do something you’re good at, and can make money to help alleviate
financial burdens while you’re at it, why not?” Bruce Fauthner of Thompson
Rivers University says. “Some people may say that it is not the safest bet,
but the point is that it is fun too. If you don’t get lucky you always have
those backups. As long as its legal, I don’t see a problem with it.”
Other point out that there are many hours involved in order to learn the
game and develop your skill, but again most students say that as long as
they keep their grades up, there is no problem with the time commitment.
Absolute Poker’s tuition series for this semester began on January 31, and
the final is scheduled to be held in May.
