In Poker, Players comes in all different types

Poker is just as much a mind game as it is one of rules and luck. In order to be the best player that you can be, you need to learn the methods of your opponents and be flexible in your style in order to take advantage of the styles of other players.

Most poker players play one style and they rarely stray form that pattern. Most players will fall into either the tight or loose category. Tight players only play the best hands, and when they get them they will play them with little hesitation. Tight players are easily identified, and once tagged other players won’t often bet against them and their pots begin to get smaller. Loose players will go with almost any hand in the belief that any cards are good enough and taking their chances on the flop, turn and river cards. Loose players are therefore able to see more action, but are prone to much larger losses when the right cards don’t turn up.

Another category of player is aggressive or passive. Aggressive players continually bet or raise, racking up the pot pre-flop, often when receiving a nut hand. Players who play this way are often very skilled, but tend to intimidate the other players at the table. A passive player will lean towards just calling all the time, even when they are holding a very strong hand. They don’t want to rock the boat. Passive players will stay in the game as long as possible, but will fold when the betting gets too heavy. They will play a lot of hands, but will suffer big losses without the ability to shoot the moon.

The most important thing to note about an opponent is whether they are strong or weak. Stronger players, be definition, have a better grasp of the game and will make the right calls at the right times, taking the pot in most showdowns. Weaker players look only to their own hands, and don’t consider what an opponent might be holding. They will reach the final showdown with poorer cards.

Successful players will mix up their play depending on the type of game they are in, and the quality of their opponents. Most importantly, avoid being a weak player by enhancing your knowledge of the game through learning strategies and spotting the game of your opponents.
