Poker Bustouts becoming all too common
Poker has never been as popular or as glamorous as it is today. Poker has
become a sport of the masses, a huge market online and in casinos. New
television series continue to broadcast games to huge and growing audiences,
and online poker sites are seeing numbers of registrants playing tables in
the thousands anytime, day or night. It seems like just about everyone is
making a fortune with the rise in popularity of the game, and one could
almost forget that there was a time when poker was frowned upon, if it
wasn’t for the continued interference by authorities. One could certainly
forget that there might have been a reason for the dark cloud that poker
existed under for so long.
That dark cloud is the premise of a new film “Poker Bustouts”, filmed in
2005 and compiling the stories, advice, and sometimes the regrets of poker
players who have been at the apex of the card mountain and those who have
fallen. The documentary was produced by Robert Willis and shows all the
great aspects of the game without glossing over the pitfalls.
The most interesting parts of “Poker Bustouts” are the stories of the
players. In many cases, the players have been making a living gambling in
Las Vegas for years. The advice they give will help the casual player find
more success as well as capably ride out downswings in fortune. There are
some frank interviews from disenchanted dealers and players alike, who have
left the game after realizing it was not quite all that it has been made out
to be.
“Poker Bustouts” isn’t exactly what its title implies. It is not an endless
story of gutter living and desperate gambles. Instead, it is a good look at
both sides of the game, from individuals involved across the spectrum. The
hard luck can sometimes turn, and even the most skilled players have their
bad days, and although in the current gaming era they are almost rock stars,
they show that sometimes life on the poker road can be as trying as any
other profession.
