Cathy Hulbert gives tips to the ladies with "Outplaying
the Boys"
New on the bookshelves for poker players is Outplaying the Boys, by Cathy
“Cat” Hulbert. Outplaying the Boys is essentially written for women poker
players by a woman poker player, but there is a lot of information and many
tips in the book that will cross gender lines. The book is witty and
informative; in fact, the writing style is so unique and personable that it
is easy to forget that it is a gender specific work- nothing will be lost in
translation for the male reader.
Hulbert has a long and successful history in the world of gambling. She
began her career with the Czech team of blackjack counters and with Ken
Uston’s blackjack group in Atlantic City. Familiar with the perception of a
woman in the male dominated world of gambling, she took on a new horizon
almost two decades ago when she sashayed into the poker room.
Not surprisingly, gentlemen gamblers had their eyebrows and their ire raised
when she made her entrance onto the scene. Perseverance paid off, and maybe
the hostility gave her the extra drive to succeed, because succeed Hulbert
did. She has been to the World Series of Poker for many years, the pinnacle
being a spot at the final table of the Seven Card Stud event in 1993.
Hulbert was named as one of the world’s best Seven Card Stud players by
Cardplayer magazine in 1996 and continues to play both Seven Card Stud and
Hold ‘Em at mid level stakes in Los Angeles.
Hulbert also pads her paychecks by instructing other women in poker in how
to learn from and duplicate her success. It is probably this practical
experience that gave her the background to write this book.
Outplaying the Boys is 324 pages ($12.95) of information gleaned from
Hulbert’s years of experience, which she passes on in a very engaging and
unique writing style. Many areas of the game and strategy are explored, and
some of the best tips come in information having to do with preparing
yourself for the game and your opponents. The chapters are divided into
instructional areas, such as how to maintain your composure while playing,
which each have a title signifying what the content is about (e.g. “If All
is Not Lost, Where Is It?). All the chapters come with several tips, and in
some there are specific incidents of lessons learned in Hulbert’s personal
experience.
Catherine Hulbert’s Outplaying the Boys is a forthright and honest detailing
of poker strategies written specifically for females but with a lot of
information that is useful to both sexes. It is a recommended read for any
player, male or female, who wants to enhance their game.
