Hachem Going to New Zealand for Poker Championships
Joe Hachem won the main event of the World Series of Poker in the United
States in 2005, beating out 5,618 other players and winning $7.5 million,
the largest victory in history. The current world poker champ ha now
confirmed that he will be playing at the New Zealand Poker Champs in
Christchurch in April 2006. Hachem will be competing against almost 150
other poker players for the best part of a $200,000 prize pool, and a seat
at the next World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Hachem, an Australian of Lebanese background, lives in Melbourne with his
wife and four children. He began his poker career in 2001, when he was
forced to leave his chiropractic work with a rare blood disorder. He sys he
is looking forward to playing in Christchurch; “I just love New Zealand,
it’s such a picturesque country. I am looking forward to visiting New
Zealand’s Garden City, seeing the sights, and seeing what Kiwi poker players
are made of!”
Needless to say, staff and ownership of the Christchurch Casino are ecstatic
at the news.
“We’re absolutely stoked. Not only is this New Zealand’s only nationwide
poker competition, with the richest prize pool, it is one of only a few
competitions in the world with a seat at the World Series up for grabs,”
said Simon Carter, Christchurch Casino’s Marketing Manager. “We knew this
would attract some of the best players in the world, but to have the world’s
reigning champ in town for the event is absolutely huge news!”
Carter adds that Hachem’s involvement augments the excitement surrounding
the Champs. “We have some of New Zealand’s biggest names competing in our
celebrity tournament, some big name bands playing and now we get to see the
current World Series of Poker champion, the greatest poker ace in action-
this is going to be the best week in the Casino’s poker history!”
The New Zealand Poker Champs are being held in Christchurch Casino from
April 1st to 8th 2006. The week will kick off with a 20k Celebrity Challenge
for Charity, where some of New Zealand’s best known stars will try to beat
each other at poker. The winning celebrity will donate their winnings to a
charity of their choice. The following day, the Canterbury Championship will
take place, followed by the South Island Championships on April 5. The New
Zealand Poker Championships will be held on the 7th and 8th of April.
