Biker Poker Run in England
The third annual Poker Run and Pig Roast has been scheduled by the Dartmouth
Building Supply in Dartmouth, England. The event helps to raise funds for
cystic fibrosis research, and will take place on May 7th at the DBS main
facility in North Dartmouth. More than 1,000 riders participated in the
event last year, raising $25,000 for research. Motorcyclists embark on an 80
mile run through Southern England, stopping at various locations and then
enjoying a roast pig dinner at the 20 acre facility. The turnout in the last
run was twice the number of the inaugural run, and this year’s turnout is
expected to be higher still.
Ron Fortier says that DBS starts planning the next year’s run as soon as the
current run is complete. The run began in May 2004 to raise money for cystic
fibrosis research in memory of Sommerset resident Jen Wing, who died of the
disease at the age of 23. Jen’s father, Ron Geary, is the customer service
manager at Dartmouth Building Supply.
Geary says he has participate in several other biker poker runs, a common
fundraiser in motorcycling circles. Bikers stop at five locations and pick
up a card at each stop. Geary said that Wing also took part in fundraisers
for research, mostly walk-athons, a feat that continued even in the later
stages of the disease when she was barely able to walk or breathe. Geary
says that his daughter knew that there would be no cure in time for her, but
that she took part in the fundraisers for kids afflicted with the disease in
the future.
This year’s event will also include live music by country rock band Alive
and Picking, of which Geary is a member. There will be a raffle for a 2006
Harley Davidson Road King Classic motorcycle. The event hopes to raise
$50,000 this year, double that of last year.
